Stephen F. Austin High School celebrated
its 8th Annual Commander Baker Softball Game. This student versus faculty
event is complete with announcers, cheerleaders and a pre-game carnival/midway.
It raises money for student scholarships, for local charities,
and it also remembers a much-loved teacher.
The man, for whom our game is named, Commander Joe
Baker, developed the R.O.T.C. program at Austin High School . Even
after earning two masters degrees from the Naval War College and having
a distinguished military career, he humbly chose to enter public education.
His conviction to God, family, our country, and a profound belief in our
youth, drove him to volunteer and contribute to a wide array of school
and community programs. He tried to impart courage, honor, and commitment
to the youth of our school, as well as other young adults in our community.
All this is but a part of what Austin remembers about Joe Baker,
who lost a courageous battle with cancer in 2001,
as we pay tribute to him with this annual fundraising program and softball
game.
