Bulldogs Rally Past Rangers, 3-1, as Brown Tosses a No-Hitter

The Bulldogs pulled out an exciting 3-1 victory over the visiting Clements Rangers on Friday night, breaking a 1-1 tie by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The night, however, belonged to Pitcher Cody Brown, who mined a pitching gem, recording a complete game seven-inning no hitter, allowing only 3 base runners while recording 8 strike outs. Well done indeed!

The Bulldogs threatened early, loading the bases with no outs in first inning after holding the Rangers scoreless, but were unable to push a run across the plate when the Clements Pitcher (Farmer) recorded two consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.

The Bulldogs again loaded the bases in the second inning, as Brown, 1B Sean Pringle and RF Chad Henry would collect singles. The goose egg was broken when SS James Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Brown on the play.

The Rangers tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, after being held scoreless through four and sending only the minimum number of batters to the plate. Consecutive walks to the two lead off hitters put a man in scoring position. As the leading runner attempted a steal of third base, the throw down could not be handled and the runner advanced to home for the only blemish on Browns evening. The threat ended there, however, as Brown nibbled the outside corner to strike out the next two batters before the inning ended on a weak ground ball back to the pitcher.

With the score tied at one in the bottom of the seventh, and two outs on the scoreboard, the Dawgs donned their rally caps and came through in a big way to send the fans home happy. Henry started the rally with a base hit to right center field. Sullivan followed with his second single of the game, moving the winning run into scoring position. With the pressure squarely on CF Tyler Whitaker's shoulders, Whitaker delivered with a screaming liner down the third base line, driving in both Henry and Sullivan with his game winning 2-RBI double!

Defensive highlights for the Dawgs included C Chris Millers caught foul ball at the base of the screen behind home plate, LF Brock West's spectacular running catch of a deep foul ball down the left field line, and 2B Jared Boyle covering some ground to his left as he went deep in the hole to throw out the speedy Ranger by half a step as 1B Sean Pringle raced back to the bag and made a nice catch to complete the play, keeping Brown's no-no in place.
