Being the home team for the first time in six games suited the Bulldogs, as they scored in every inning and powered their way to a 20-1 victory over the Lutheran North Lions in their opening game of the Ewell Jackson Tournament.
Bulldog starting pitcher Ryan Dalton (2-0) went three innings for the win, allowing only a one-out double in the first, while logging 6 strikeouts. Reliever Erik Schweiger worked the fourth and fifth to close it out, giving up only an unearned run.
The story of the game, though, was the hitting clinic put on by the Bulldog line-up, racking up season highs in runs (20), hits (17), and extra-base hits (8). SS Barrett Barnes set the tone early, homering to straight-away center on the first pitch of the home-half of the first. CF Daniel Rockett followed with a single to left, and came around to score two pitches later on Dalton’s triple to right center. RF Blake Doerr followed with a single to score Dalton, and RF Tony Gigliotti’s one-out single brought home Doerr. A bad-hop error on the shortstop put DH Matt Hills aboard, and with two outs, C Drew Miller singled to right center to bring home Gigliotti and Hills to make the score 6-0.
The runs kept coming for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second. Consecutive one-out doubles by Dalton and Doerr were followed by back-to-back singles by Schweiger and Gigliotti. After Hills was hit by a pitch, 2B Luke Mulcahey brought in the fourth run of the inning with a line single to left. The Lions nearly escaped further damage when Barnes flied to deep right, but the tough afternoon sun prevented the right fielder from making the catch, letting two runs score and allowing Barnes to reach third. The ‘Dogs capitalized with back-to-back doubles by Rockett and Dalton, a walk to Doerr, and the biggest blow of the inning – Schweiger’s three-run shot to center to make the score 17-0.
In the third, the Bulldogs were limited to one run on back-to-back leadoff walks to Mulcahey and Miller, and PH Scott Duncan’s RBI single. With Schweiger aboard in the fourth courtesy of a 4-pitch walk, 1B Clint VanTilborg blasted a one-out home run to left center to wrap up the Bulldog scoring at 20.
